About this board game

Tikal II: The Lost Temple is a strategic expedition game for 2–4 players, with games lasting around 120 minutes. As rival scientists returning to Guatemala, players explore an undiscovered temple, seek valuable gold, and compete to build the most successful expedition.

Each turn offers two distinct actions. First, move part of your expedition around the board to choose an available action tile. Then, move your head scientist within the temple to explore new rooms and uncover gold. These actions create a careful balance between opportunities outside the temple and discoveries within it.

  • Collect and deliver treasures to earn points.
  • Compete for majorities in selected rooms.
  • Explore the main temple and an outer secret chamber.
  • Manage the specific items needed to move freely within the temple.

Planning is essential in Tikal II, because your scientist cannot move freely through the temple without the right items. At the same time, actions around the board become increasingly scarce, creating tension as players decide which opportunities to claim and which to leave for their opponents.

A game consists of two rounds, with each round ending in a scoring. Players must develop their expedition while pursuing several possible routes to points, from delivering treasures to controlling important rooms and exploring the temple.

A sequel to the 1999 Spiel des Jahres winner Tikal, Tikal II: The Lost Temple comes from the world-famous design duo Kramer-Kiesling. When the final scoring is complete, the player with the most gold is declared the winner.
