About this board game

1940: The Fall of France – A Panzer Grenadier Game is a stand-alone game for two players, with an average play time of 120 minutes. It includes 50 scenarios covering the German offensive that brought the campaign to its dramatic conclusion within six weeks.

In the spring of 1940, the French Army appeared invincible, expecting to repel Germany and overwhelm its ancient foe in 1941 with a massive wave of new armored divisions. Instead, German panzers achieved the breakthrough. The scenarios portray the French Army both attacking and defending, with forces ranging from elite Foreign Legion and Coloniale units to pitiful second-line reserves.

The French order of battle offers an extensive collection of armor and support weapons. Players encounter S35 cavalry tanks, B1-bis heavy tanks, FT17, R35, R40, H39, H35 and FCM 36 light tanks, as well as armored cars and reconnaissance vehicles including the Panhard, AMR33, P16 and AMR35. The unusual C2 multi-turreted heavy tank also makes an appearance.

  • French units include motorcycle troops, horsed cavalry and the powerful 155mm GPF rifle.
  • German forces range from the PzKw I through the PzKw IIIE and 38t.
  • New vehicles include the SiG33 assault gun, alongside pieces for Infantry Regiment Grossdeutschland in distinctive colors.
  • Eight semi-rigid mapboards depict the battlefields, created by Guy Riessen.

Designed by Belgian wargame veteran Philippe Leonard, 1940: The Fall of France presents a broad portrait of the campaign through varied forces and situations. Its components and scenarios make it a complete entry in the Panzer Grenadier series, requiring no other game to play.
