About this expansion

ASL: Journal – Issue Five is a 2004 two-player journal and scenario collection for ASL, combining historical and tactical articles with 12 scenarios set across World War II.

The articles cover a broad range of subjects, including an excerpt from Operation Bluecoat, jungle tactics in ASL, and scenario analysis of Water Foul from OVHS. The issue also includes a campaign game analysis of OVHS, more of Jim Stahler’s “chestnuts from the fireplace,” and scenario analysis of Acts of Defiance.

Additional coverage examines AFV passengers and crews, adding another focused topic to this varied issue. The scenario lineup ranges from small orders of battle to large forces, with turn lengths from six to ten.

  • J78 Fast Heinz: 10 turns, small OB, 1941 Russia.
  • J79 Rommel’s Remedy and J80 Egypt’s Last Hope: 1942 Egypt scenarios with large OBs.
  • J81 Twisted Knickers: 6 turns, small mostly-armor OB, 1942 Egypt.
  • J82 Pavlov’s House and J83 Bloody Nose: 1942 Russia scenarios.
  • J84 Makin Taken: 7 turns, smallish OB, 1943 PTO.
  • J85 Ptichin’ In through J89 Himmler’s House: actions set in 1944 Russia, France, Poland, and Belgium, followed by 1945 Berlin.

With its mix of research, tactical discussion, campaign commentary, vehicle-related analysis, and varied scenarios, ASL: Journal – Issue Five offers substantial material for two players exploring different periods, theaters, and force sizes.
