Altar Quest

About this board game

Altar Quest is an epic fantasy adventure board game for 1–4 players, with games lasting about 90 minutes. Each player chooses a hero with a personal set of cards and equipment before setting out on a dangerous quest.

Before play begins, select a quest deck, a threat deck representing the main enemy forces, and a sinister villain deck. These decks are fixed and require no assembly, yet they can be mixed and matched to create a wide variety of combinations.

• Choose heroes with their own cards and equipment.
• Combine quest, threat, and villain decks for varied adventures.
• Face enemies from the selected threat deck alongside ever-present lurkers.
• Use altar dice to reveal changing mixes of mystical rhunes.

The chosen threat deck determines the main enemies heroes must defeat, but danger can also emerge from the lurker deck. Lurkers are represented by various enemy types, adding further variety to the foes encountered during each quest.

Heroes must complete their quest before drawing the attention of the almighty villain. At the same time, the unstable magic of the altars continually affects the game, creating another force to manage as the adventure unfolds.

The altar dice are connected to mystical powers known as rhunes, which can enhance cards in different ways. Whenever an altar die is used by either the heroes or the enemy, it is rolled again, producing an ever-changing mix of rhunes to draw upon.

Inspired by the modular deck system introduced in Street Masters and Brook City, Altar Quest offers a deep experience as either a one-off game or an engrossing campaign.
