About this expansion

Ancient Realm: Monuments & Misfortunes is a 6-card expansion for one player, designed for a 15-minute game of building a growing civilization.

This expansion randomly replaces some of the standard game’s Districts with special Districts featuring Monument and/or Misfortune blocks. These additions introduce new ways to manage your Realm as you develop it.

• Monuments: Construct them without paying any cost and score them at the end of the game, or cover them to gain a free Resource.
• Misfortunes: Negative events that apply while they remain in your Realm. Cover one to eliminate its effect, or endure it and score points for your resilience at the end of the game.

The expansion asks you to balance immediate benefits against the lasting consequences of the Districts in your Realm. A Monument can represent a cost-free route to end-game points, but covering it may provide a useful free Resource instead.

Misfortunes create a different decision. You can cover them to remove their negative effect, or leave them in place and accept the challenge in pursuit of resilience points. Together, these special blocks make each replaced District an important part of your civilization’s story.

Released in 2023, Ancient Realm: Monuments & Misfortunes offers a compact addition centered on triumphs, setbacks, and the choices made while managing both. Its six cards bring Monument and Misfortune effects into the standard game without changing the expansion’s focused, quick-playing format.
