Arquebus: Men of Iron Volume IV – The Battles for Northern Italy 1495-1544 is a two-player historical wargame with games lasting up to 300 minutes. It recreates eight major battles fought for control of Northern Italy, especially Milan, during a period when warfare was undergoing a profound transformation.

At the beginning of this era, armies relied heavily on mounted men-at-arms and tightly packed pike formations, particularly those fielded by the Swiss. As the conflicts continued, the growing power of the arquebus, an early musket, forced closed pike formations to open up while reducing dependence on heavily mounted cavalry.

Using the popular Men of Iron mechanics, Arquebus focuses closely on the changing character of weaponry and battlefield formations. The game explores the differences between closed and open formations, the decline of the Swiss, and the rise of the German Landsknecht, a major military force of the period whose flamboyant uniforms helped set fashion trends across Western Europe.

Most scenarios use half-sized maps and can be played in three hours or less. Cerignola is a tiny 8-by-11-inch, page-sized battle, while Pavia is a large one-map scenario featuring extensive maneuver and difficult decisions. Historically, Pavia ended in a crushing French defeat, with King Francis I captured and more than half of France’s army lost.
