About this board game

Assault – Red Horizon 41 is a tactical-level wargame for 2–4 players, with games lasting about 180 minutes, set during Operation Barbarossa in June 1941. Players command historical German or Soviet infantry, artillery, and armored units in battles shaped for playability rather than strict simulation.

The modular Assault Game System offers multiple scenarios and variable forces. Instead of using a fixed order of battle, players draw Formation Cards based on their chosen side. These cards determine the number and type of units available, creating changing tactical challenges and regular surprises from one game to the next.

Command Points drive the action. During the Planning Phase, players secretly select which units they will activate, usually enough for roughly 75% of their available force. This encourages priorities and careful decision-making while keeping the Action Phase focused and flowing.

  • Flexible forces: Formation Cards vary each scenario’s infantry, artillery, and armor or vehicle units.
  • Streamlined battlefield: The system limits stacking to one unit counter per hex, except when units are being transported.
  • Efficient organization: Double-sided command and unit-state markers are flipped or removed during the Organization Phase.
  • Dynamic campaign: Linked scenarios can change their starting positions and forces according to previous victory results.

The included “Crossing the Narew” campaign follows company commanders from the German 7th Infantry Division and Soviet 13th Rifle Division across four connected battles on 24–25 June 1941. Players fight for control of key bridges and the Narew River crossing near Bialystok.

With eight different campaign plots, Assault – Red Horizon 41 combines historical Eastern Front context with variable objectives, forces, and campaign consequences for substantial replay value.
