About this board game
BattleTech is a science-fiction tactical wargame for 2–4 players, centered on battles between giant fighting robots known as BattleMechs. Players typically control one to four Mechs each, although vehicles, infantry, power armor, aircraft, and other unit types can join the fight.
Combat combines varied weapon ranges, heat generation, and discrete hit locations covering areas such as the torso, arms, and legs. Mechs differ greatly in mobility and firepower, giving players meaningful tactical choices. You can select from provided designs or create your own Mechs from scratch.
Games are usually played on one or more hex mapsheets or mounted map boards, with optional rules available for hexless play. Additional map sets provide more battlefield variety, while miniatures representing Mechs, vehicles, and other units are available but are not required for play.
- Introductory play: the Beginner Box includes two plastic Mechs, a map, and simplified quick-start rules.
- Expanded Mech battles: A Game of Armored Combat adds eight plastic Mechs, mapsheets, cardboard standees, and full rules for Mechs and basic gear.
- Advanced forces: Clan Invasion adds further Mechs and maps while introducing advanced technologies and additional unit types.
The current rulebook line supports different levels of play. Total Warfare covers common combined-arms games, while the BattleMech Manual focuses on advanced Mech-only battles. Technical Readouts, record sheets, maps, era-based sourcebooks, construction rules, campaign systems, and roleplaying games expand the setting and tabletop options.
With its detailed damage model, extensive equipment options, and broad range of supporting material, BattleTech offers a flexible framework for anything from a small duel between Mechs to larger battles involving combined arms.
