About this board game
Between Two Cities is a partnership-driven tile-drafting game for 1–7 players, playable in about 25 minutes, in which city planners create two cities and compete through shared planning.
Set in the early 1800s, a time of immense construction and urbanization, you are a world-renowned master city planner. Each assignment pairs you with another player: together, you help design the heart of one city while also collaborating with a different partner on another.
Each tile represents part of a city, including factories, shops, parks, and landmarks. On every turn, choose two tiles from your hand and reveal them. Work separately with your two partners to place one tile into each of your cities, then pass the remaining hand around the table.
- Shared city building: Cooperate with the player on your left and the player on your right.
- Tile drafting: Select and reveal two tiles before placing one in each city.
- Balanced objectives: Give both cities your attention instead of focusing on just one.
- Livability scoring: Your final score is the lower of the scores from your two cities.
At the end of the game, each city is scored for its livability. Because your final result is determined by the weaker of your two cities, success requires careful cooperation and a balanced approach. The player with the highest final score wins.
Between Two Cities supports 3–7 players in its standard format, with a 2-player variant for head-to-head competition and a solo Automa variant. Released in 2015, it combines quick turns, shared decisions, and a distinctive challenge: build two impressive cities without letting either one fall behind.
