About this expansion

Black Sonata: Strange Shadows is a collection of expansions for 1–2 players, with games lasting around 40 minutes. The modules can be used separately or in combinations, including alongside the earlier Fair Youth expansions.

The Darkest Ladies introduces an alternative set of Dark Lady cards without suits. Instead, you must deduce the Dark Lady’s symbols in their correct order, with more card-flipping and hole-peeking challenges along the way.

With Indirections, stealth cards add new information to your deck. Compass symbols reveal the direction the Dark Lady travelled from her last location, while other cards indicate the possible colour of her current location.

  • Blazonry: Deduce the symbols of the Dark Lady’s heraldic blazon using special fog cards before you can access her.
  • The Ferryman: Travel between any two riverside locations in one turn, but the ferryman prevents searches at those locations and requires location cards to be collected in a specific order.
  • Cat and Mouse: Play an asymmetric two-player game as either the Dark Lady or the Historian tracking and unmasking her.
  • Tarry cards: Temporarily pause the Dark Lady’s flight, with a later cost to pay.

Four extra fog cards provide beneficial effects. Add them to increase the fog deck and allow more searches, replace detrimental cards to make fog less punishing, or randomly exchange cards for greater variety.

Whether you want more clues, new movement information, or a direct contest between hunter and hunted, Black Sonata: Strange Shadows expands the investigation with modular challenges and fresh ways to pursue the Dark Lady.
