About this expansion
Caratacus: The Roman Conquest of Britain is a 2–4-player historical board game with an approximately 240-minute playing time, covering Rome’s efforts to conquer Britain and expand the empire under Emperor Claudius.
The game presents two important moments in the conflict: the Medway in AD 43, during the main battle, and Wales in AD 51, during the last battle in these Roman efforts. Together, these settings portray the challenge faced by Rome as its commanders and legions confronted determined British resistance.
Rome brings legions and commanders described as being of the highest ability available to the campaign. Opposing them are the Britons, whose forces remain mobility-oriented and light. Their nominal leader, Caratacus, chief of the Catuvellauni, is presented as an especially wily “barbarian” commander for his era.
Caratacus includes the following components:
- 40 full-color, double-sided 1/2-inch counters
- One 22 × 34-inch map
- A four-page scenario book
This game is an addition to the same broader series as Caesar: Conquest of Gaul; a copy of that game is required to play Caratacus. The compact component set supports its focus on the Roman invasion and the contrasting military qualities of Rome’s legions and Britain’s lighter, more mobile army.
Released in 2000, Caratacus offers a substantial historical contest centered on two stages of the Roman conquest of Britain. Players can explore the conflict through its Medway and Wales settings while confronting the opposing strengths of Roman military ability and Caratacus’s leadership.
