About this board game
Carcassonne: The Discovery is a stand-alone tile-laying game for 2–5 players, with an average play time of 45 minutes. Set in a newly discovered region of meadows, mountains, and seas, it offers a simpler version of Carcassonne with meaningful strategic decisions.
On each turn, a player must place a tile, matching identical landscape types, and may then place a follower on it. Each player has four followers, plus a fifth used on the scoring track. A follower can be placed only in a region without another follower already present.
- Robbers occupy mountain regions.
- Seafarers occupy sea regions.
- Explorers occupy meadow regions.
Followers are not scored automatically when a region is completed. Instead, players decide when to remove them. The size of the region determines its value whether it is closed or still open, although closed regions score considerably more points.
This timing decision is at the heart of Carcassonne: The Discovery. Regions can become more valuable, creating difficult choices between claiming points now and waiting for a larger reward. Mountainous regions have an additional way to increase in value, even after they have already been completed.
With its straightforward rules and focus on player-controlled scoring, the game presents a distinct take on the Carcassonne series. The landscape grows tile by tile, while every follower placement and removal can shape the value of the region around it.
