Cowboys: The Way of the Gun is an Old West shootout game for 2–10 players, with sessions lasting about 60 minutes. Players recreate dramatic confrontations across six double-sided geomorphic mapboards, taking on the roles of lawmen, gunfighters, gamblers, ne’er-do-wells, and other figures of the frontier.

With 26 historical and Hollywood-style scenarios, the game covers a wide range of western actions. Bank robberies, cattle rustling, stagecoach holdups, jail breaks, and lynch mobs all provide settings for opposing sides to test their nerve and skill. Town folk and horses can also become important variables during a scenario.

The rules are designed to be picked up and played in minutes, while optional rules add extra Old West flavor without making the game difficult to play. Familiar legends such as Wyatt, Doc, Jesse, and Billy join a colorful cast of characters, bringing the daring and dastardly deeds of the frontier to the table.
