About this expansion

Cthulhu Wars: Dire Cthulhu is a 2019 board game experience for 2–8 players, with a play time of 90 minutes. It features Dire Cthulhu as an independent Great Old One with a cosmic-level psyche that can reshape the outcome of battles.

When Dire Cthulhu is present in a Battle Area, his ability allows Battle results to be reassigned to factions that are not even participating in the Battle. This creates a ruthless opportunity to turn an enemy’s crowded area into a source of additional victims.

One possible tactic is to send a large army, including Dire Cthulhu, into an opponent’s area. You can then conspire with a third player to move a single Cultist into that Area and Battle that lone unit. Because the opposing Cultist rolls nothing against you, the dice you roll can be redirected to the other factions in the area.

  • Reassign rolled Kills and Pains to bystanders.
  • Target factions that are not participating in the Battle.
  • Leave those bystanders unable to retaliate.

If you replace the normal Cthulhu with Dire Cthulhu, the classic figure can be used for the original independent Cthulhu Great Old One, as described in the master rulebook. The rules even allow both figures to serve as independent Great Old Ones in the same game, creating the possibility of Cthulhu versus Cthulhu.

The Dire Cthulhu sculpt is credited to Tidal 4. With its unusual battle interaction and deliberately cruel tactical possibilities, Cthulhu Wars: Dire Cthulhu gives crowded battle areas a dangerous new dimension.
