About this expansion

Cthulhu Wars: Shaggai Map Expansion is a 2019 expansion for 2–5 players, with games lasting about 120 minutes. It introduces the planet Shaggai during its destruction, creating a battlefield that steadily collapses beneath the players.

Shaggai is divided into hex-shaped areas, reflecting the insectile nature of its native inhabitants. The map includes both oceans and land, and play begins with a single Worm of Ghroth, a harbinger of annihilation.

During each Doom phase, existing Worms tend to eradicate the areas they occupy while new Worms are spawned. Eradicated areas do more than remove parts of the map: they can also generate valuable rewards for players willing to risk their forces.

  • An eradicated controlled gate earns an Elder Sign.
  • Each eradicated unit earns 1 Power.
  • Eradicated areas can be jumped over to reach other parts of the map, but doing so costs a unit.
  • If the map deteriorates too far, the game can end before anyone reaches 30 Doom.

The approaching destruction is clearly signaled by the presence of a Worm, giving players a chance to escape before their units, monsters, or Great Old Ones are lost. The Power gained from eradication may not replace a major loss, but it offers some compensation for the devastation.

If Shaggai collapses far enough to trigger the alternate ending, players add their Doom and Elder Signs to determine the victor. With its shifting routes, dangerous sacrifices, and escalating planetary ruin, Cthulhu Wars: Shaggai Map Expansion makes the battlefield itself an active threat. The Worm of Ghroth sculpt is credited to “Tidal 4.”
