About this board game
Druid: Boudicca’s Rebellion, 61 A.D. is a two-player operational-level board wargame with an approximate play time of 240 minutes, recreating the ancient Britons’ revolt against Roman rule.
One player commands the British rebels, while the other leads Imperial Rome. Boudicca’s forces begin with strength in numbers, but their disparate tribes must be rallied into a united rebellion. Rome starts in a weaker position, yet its disciplined legions can call on powerful reinforcements.
The conflict moves across first-century Britain in a vivid simulation of ancient guerrilla warfare. The Britons can strike cities, burn villages, and sack towns before melting into the island’s vast forests, where Roman legionaries cannot find them. Meanwhile, the Roman player must marshal forces effectively to contain the revolt and bring the rebels to battle.
Druid combines operational movement and combat with thematic rules that give the campaign unusual character and replay value. Notable systems include:
- Tribal revolts that can draw Britain’s disparate peoples into the uprising
- Hidden deployment for uncertainty on the battlefield
- Legion activation and powerful Roman reinforcements
- Druid invocation and berserk units
Historically, Boudicca’s rebellion saw the defeat of the Roman Ninth Legion and the destruction of Londinium and Camulodunum. The Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus eventually gathered two legions and destroyed a Briton force ten times its size, ending the revolt.
With its unusual subject, fast-paced play, and wealth of thematic detail, Druid offers a distinctive wargaming experience centered on one of ancient history’s lesser-known conflicts. It was later re-implemented by Boudicca: The Warrior Queen.
