About this expansion

Panzer Grenadier: Sinister Forces is a two-player expansion for the Panzer Grenadier game system, offering approximately 120 minutes of Eastern Front scenarios and historical background.

The expansion focuses on the Soviet NKVD and the German Waffen SS, political formations that were drawn into front-line combat during the four years of warfare in the East. Background articles place the scenarios in the wider context of the war, while the battles reflect the fanaticism with which these troops often fought.

Sinister Forces is not playable by itself. It requires Eastern Front for most scenarios, while playing all scenarios requires either Afrika Korps or Desert Rats.

The SS troops are generally lower quality than corresponding German Army pieces from Eastern Front, reflecting the lower standards of training and recruitment for these political formations. The expansion also introduces a range of distinctive weapons, vehicles, and formations:

  • Huge 220mm mortars seized from the French army in 1940
  • French-made B1 heavy tanks and flamethrower conversions
  • Soviet-made T-34 tanks
  • Light SPW 250 half-tracks and fast Volkswagen Kubelwagen personnel carriers
  • Special pieces and scenarios for the Norwegian ski battalion and Finnish SS battalion

These additions give the Eastern Front setting new equipment and sharply contrasting unit qualities. The Norwegian and Finnish formations are represented as SS units of high combat value, standing apart from the expansion’s generally lower-quality SS troops.

Released in 2006, Panzer Grenadier: Sinister Forces expands Eastern Front, Afrika Korps, and Desert Rats. It is also expanded by March on Leningrad and Siege of Leningrad.
