Francis Drake: Montezuma’s Legacy Expansion is an expansion for 3–5 players that adds Aztec Relics to the 120-minute game of maritime adventure. Released in 2013, it changes the treasure connected to Spanish Galleons across the game’s voyages.

In Francis Drake, players take on the challenge of emulating the legend of Sir Francis Drake during the Elizabethan era. Hero to the English but a pirate to the Spanish, Drake serves as the inspiration for a race toward the riches of the Aztec and Incan Empires.

After setting up the game, each player must chart a course toward those riches and complete three missions. Montezuma’s Legacy changes part of that journey by replacing the Spanish Galleons and the Jewel that accompanies each Spanish Galleon.

• The Jewel is replaced on each voyage with an Aztec Relic.
• If a Spanish Galleon is captured, its Aztec Relic goes into the capturing player’s treasure chest.
• Aztec Relics are scored at the end of the game.

This expansion offers a focused variation on the treasure found during each voyage. The Aztec Relic provides a new item to pursue when a Spanish Galleon is captured, while preserving the central objective of completing missions and seeking wealth in the Americas.

For players familiar with the original game, Montezuma’s Legacy provides a straightforward way to replace the existing Spanish Galleon treasure with an Aztec-themed alternative. Its relics become part of the final scoring through the treasure chests of the players who capture them.
