French Toast

About this board game

French Toast is a word-guessing game for 2–10 players that plays in about 10 minutes. One player becomes the Toastmaster, while everyone else works together to discover a hidden Secret Word.

At the start of the game, the Toastmaster draws a Secret Word. The Toastmaster cannot give ordinary clues or explanations; instead, they communicate only by repeating guesses back to the group.

Players make guesses they believe may be related to the Secret Word. After each guess, the Toastmaster decides whether it is closer to the Secret Word than the closest guess made so far. If it is, that new guess is repeated. If not, the Toastmaster repeats the previous closest guess instead.

The meaning of “closer” is entirely up to the Toastmaster. They can use any criteria they think will help guide the group, leaving everyone else to study the repeated responses and work out the Toastmaster’s way of thinking.

• One player secretly chooses the target word as Toastmaster.

• Only guesses judged closer replace the current closest guess.
• The group has six rounds to identify the Secret Word.

Every guess matters, because the group has only six rounds to move closer and eventually name the Secret Word itself. French Toast combines deduction, creative associations, and careful reading of another player’s choices in a compact game designed for quick sessions.
