About this expansion
Gloom: Unwelcome Guests is a 2007 expansion for 2–5 players that adds 55 transparent cards to Gloom, with games lasting about 30 minutes. It introduces new Modifiers, Events, Untimely Deaths, and an additional family to the game’s peculiar world of misfortune.
In Gloom, players make their eccentric families suffer the greatest tragedies possible before helping them reach the respite of death. This expansion adds the malodorous Malone mob, led by Boils Malone, along with The Broken Arms Hotel Residence card for use with the Unhappy Homes expansion.
New persistent effect icons add another layer of strategy. When one of these effects is attached to a character, its special ability remains active even if another card covers it. The effect ends only when that character is killed, making the timing and placement of cards especially important.
- 55 transparent cards for use with Gloom
- New Modifiers, Events, and Untimely Deaths
- The Malone family and The Broken Arms Hotel Residence
- Persistent effects that remain active beneath covered cards
- Five Unwelcome Guest cards that can change family membership
At the start of the game, one or more Unwelcome Guest cards may be dealt face up to the table’s center. Guests follow the card types shown on them, and a living Guest immediately moves to the family of the character receiving one of its trigger cards, taking all attached Modifiers along with it.
A Guest remains part of that family until it moves again. In Gloom: Unwelcome Guests, this shifting allegiance can even delay the game’s conclusion if a final play draws a Guest to the family that seemed ready to win.
