About this board game
Hold the Line: Frederick’s War is a 1–2 player historical battle game with approximately 60-minute scenarios, set during Prussia’s struggle with Austria in the Age of Reason.
The game presents eight battles from Frederick II’s campaigns: Mollwitz, Choutusitz, Hohenfriedburg, Kesseldorf, Kolin, Leuthen, Hochkirk, and Liegnitz. Each scenario recreates a different contest in the long duel between a still-fragile Prussia and the first-class power of Austria.
Players receive command points to activate units for movement, close assault, and fire combat. Each side also receives a random number of additional command points, creating uncertainty over how much can be accomplished each turn. This battlefield chaos helps make the scenarios highly replayable.
- Eight battles from Frederick’s War
- Advanced command rules
- More detailed cavalry rules
- Optional rules for each warring nation’s units
- Scenarios designed for approximately one hour of play
The Prussian army is well drilled and supported by talented generals including Schwerin, Zieten, Leopold von Dessau, and Frederick the Great. Austria is slightly weaker, but fields fearsome light infantry and later scenarios introduce capable commanders such as Daun and Loudon.
With its expanded rules and focused historical scenarios, Hold the Line: Frederick’s War builds on the Hold the Line system while adding greater detail to command and cavalry. Can Prussia humble Austria and rise to first-class power, or can Austria weather the Prussian storm and halt the first steps toward decline?
