Kingdom Builder: Marshlands

About this expansion

Kingdom Builder: Marshlands is a boxed expansion for Kingdom Builder, designed by Donald X. Vaccarino, for 2–5 players with a playing time of about 45 minutes.

This expansion introduces four new board quadrants featuring the Marshes land type. Five Marsh terrain cards are added to the terrain deck, giving the game a new landscape to incorporate into your kingdom.

Marshlands also brings a substantial collection of new content to the Kingdom Builder system:

• 24 location tiles featuring 8 new abilities
• 12 summary cards for the edges of the board
• Four new board quadrants with Marshes
• Five Marsh terrain cards
• Forts replacing castles and offering a different scoring possibility

The expansion’s defining feature is its system of bonus abilities. A bonus ability is unlocked when you manage to collect the same ability twice, rewarding you for developing a focused collection of powers during the game.

For example, collecting the Rider ability lets you move one of your pieces into an adjacent land hex. Collecting a second Rider not only allows you to move twice via your Riders, but also unlocks the ability to jump one piece in a straight line to the first empty land hex.

With its Marshes, replacement Forts, new location tiles, and ability upgrades, Kingdom Builder: Marshlands adds fresh options and a distinctive progression system to the Kingdom Builder experience. Released in 2016, it is the third boxed expansion for the game.
