Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation is a two-player, 30-minute asymmetrical Stratego-like game themed around The Lord of the Rings.

Each player commands a force of nine unique characters whose identities are hidden from the opponent at the beginning of the game. The Fellowship player leads the light side, while the opposing player controls the forces of dark. As characters move across the board, confrontations are resolved with each player’s hand of nine unique cards.

The game’s hidden identities and card-based combat create an uncertain contest in which every advancing character may conceal a different threat. The two sides also pursue completely different objectives, giving each player a distinct way to approach the battle.

• Fellowship victory: Move Frodo into Mordor to destroy the One Ring.
• Evil victory: Kill Frodo or move three Evil characters into the Shire.

These asymmetrical victory conditions make the central struggle more than a direct fight for territory. The Fellowship must protect Frodo and advance toward Mordor, while Evil can seek Frodo’s destruction or attempt to establish a presence in the Shire.

Released in 2002, Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation condenses its theme into a focused game for exactly two players. It has also been the subject of an extended edition, comprising the original characters along with a full set of new characters.
