About this board game
Magic Realm is a complex fantasy adventure game for 1–16 players, with games lasting about 240 minutes. Each player takes the role of one of sixteen major characters, exploring a land of monsters, treasures, native groups, and the scattered remains of a lost magical civilization.
The map changes from game to game as mountains, caves, valleys, and woods create a new setting for every adventure. Many locations and discoveries remain hidden, so exploration can reveal unexpected dangers, valuable treasures, or magical opportunities. The result is an unpredictable experience in which no two games unfold exactly alike.
Players decide where their characters go, what they attempt, and how they handle themselves in combat. Adventurers may encounter deadly monsters, human tribes ranging from friendly to hostile, and treasures that enhance their abilities in different ways.
The complete system combines a wide range of fantasy-adventure activities:
- Hiking, hiding, searching, fatigue, wounds, and rest
- Trading and hiring natives
- Combat between characters, monsters, and natives
- Weapons used on horseback or on foot
- Magical effects and character-enhancing treasures
Additional playing pieces are prepared for use but may never enter a particular game. Treasure troves, treasures, and spells can remain unfound, while monsters and natives may never be encountered. This abundance of possibilities helps Magic Realm create a small but complete fantasy world filled with suspense, surprises, and desperate struggles.
With an Avalon Hill complexity rating of 9, Magic Realm is designed for players seeking a detailed and highly variable fantasy adventure in which every new map brings a different challenge.
