About this board game

Magnum Sal is a 2010 eurogame for 2–4 players, with games lasting approximately 120 minutes. Each player takes the role of a foreman managing a mining team in the Wieliczka Salt Mine, known as Magnum Sal.

Set against the history of the Cracow Salt Mine, the game draws on the year 1368, when Casimir the Great established the Statute of the Cracow Salt Mine. According to the rulebook, the king will award the title of Royal Steward to the foreman whose work demonstrates the greatest skill in salt mining.

Players explore the mine and seek to extract its valuable salt as efficiently as possible. This “white gold” can be sold at the market, but the king’s salt orders are especially important. Fulfilling these orders is central to the race for royal recognition.

  • Explore the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
  • Manage a team of miners as a foreman.
  • Extract salt efficiently and sell it at the market.
  • Complete the king’s salt orders.

Money earned from extracting salt determines the winner. At the end of the game, the player who has earned the most money receives the title of Royal Steward and wins.

The name Magnum Sal means “Great Salt” in Latin and is the name by which Wieliczka was first noted in some documents. Its historical connection to the mine gives the game a distinctive setting focused on the craft, commerce, and royal demands of salt mining.
