About this board game

Massive Darkness is a fantasy dungeon-crawl board game for 1–6 players, with an average play time of 120 minutes. It brings the classic fantasy role-playing experience to the tabletop through an action-packed campaign, gorgeous miniatures, and a streamlined system that requires no game master to control the enemies.

Begin by choosing a Hero, each with two special starting skills, then pair that Hero with a Class. Some combinations unlock an additional skill, creating a wide range of choices and play styles. As the adventure progresses, Heroes complete Quests, kill monsters, collect loot, and gain XP to spend on new Skills.

Inspired by the Zombicide system, Massive Darkness focuses on the actions of the Heroes while enemy behavior is resolved automatically. Players can search the dungeon for equipment, face dangerous encounters, or try to sneak past enemies by taking advantage of the map’s dark areas.

  • Heroes and Classes: Combine characters and classes, then develop them with new skills.
  • Dungeon exploration: Search for loot and navigate areas where darkness can provide an advantage.
  • Varied enemies: Face Minions, Agents, Roaming Monsters, and Bosses.
  • Guardians: Any monster type can spawn as a Guardian and use a random piece of equipment against the Heroes.

Guardians create especially challenging encounters, but defeating one rewards the Heroes with the equipment it used. With its evolving characters, automated enemies, and wealth of fantasy miniatures, Massive Darkness keeps the focus on exploration, combat, and the choices made by the players throughout each Quest.
