About this board game

Medieval is a war and influence game for 1–6 players, with sessions lasting around 180 minutes. Lead a powerful cabal seeking control of provinces, kingdoms, and the Medieval world through skulduggery, political pressure, and outright conquest.

Your influence can spread across Europe, the East, and North Africa, but rival players are not your only threat. The Mongol hordes advance from the East as a non-player power, and the game ends after their seventh attack.

Each turn, you play action cards, some mandatory and others optional. These actions shape the struggle for territory and may allow you to wage war, unleash the plague, or excommunicate the unworthy. You also collect income and attack opponents, always working toward the acquisition of more provinces.

  • Control provinces: Expand your influence across three broad regions.
  • Play action cards: Use mandatory and optional actions to advance your plans.
  • Collect income: Provinces provide the resources that support your ambitions.
  • Resist the Mongols: Face a non-player power whose attacks determine the game’s end.

Provinces are central to Medieval: they provide income and are the means by which the game is won. Every conflict, card play, and territorial decision contributes to the race for greater control while the Mongol threat presses in from the East.

This second edition features a full graphic and component overhaul of the original game, including a mounted map in place of cards and streamlined rules. It also adds optional rules for games with one, two, and six players, supporting a range of player counts for this ambitious contest of expansion and survival.
