About this board game
Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game: Rules Manual is a 208-page hardback tabletop game guide for 2–4 players, with games lasting around 120 minutes. It provides the rules and hobby guidance needed to collect, build, paint, and play with Citadel and Forge World models inspired by The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
The manual introduces the essentials, from choosing an army and preparing a battlefield to understanding model profiles and core game concepts. Battles unfold through five phases: Priority, Movement, Shoot, Fight, and Courage, combining tactical positioning, ranged attacks, close combat, and tests to see whether warriors stand their ground.
- Rules for Monsters, including War Beasts and their devastating battlefield presence
- Guidance on close-combat weapons, missiles, equipment, and armour
- Magical Powers, Special Rules, Advanced Rules, Siege Engines, and Sieges
- Matched Play guidance, including army building, Alliances, objectives, and Heroic Tiers
Narrative Play lets you recreate memorable battles and scenes from the books and films using scenarios from The Armies of The Lord of the Rings and The Armies of The Hobbit. For a more unrestricted experience, Open Play encourages players to create their own scenarios, armies, objectives, and battlefields.
Matched Play adds structure through agreed points limits, tactical objectives, wargear limits, and 12 dedicated scenarios, each offering a different challenge. The manual also includes a showcase of painted miniatures and four example armies: Minas Tirith, Isengard, Defenders of Erebor, and Azog’s Hunters.
Whether you choose the forces of Good or Evil, Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game: Rules Manual is a central reference for bringing the conflicts of Middle-earth to the tabletop.
