About this expansion
Mississippi Queen: The Black Rose is an expansion for Mississippi Queen that supports 2–6 players and runs for about 60 minutes. Released in 1998, it adds new river sections, boats, hazards, and variants to the paddle-boat race.
The expansion introduces three terrain features. Sand bars and floating logs are hazards that slow paddle-boats entering them or being pushed into them. Coal refueling stations provide places where paddle-boats can dock to refill their coal.
- New river sections featuring sand bars, floating logs, and coal refueling stations
- A sixth paddle-boat for games with up to six players
- A second red paddle-boat for two-player games
- The black “Black Rose” paddle-wheeler
- New rules and game variants, including two-player rules
The Black Rose is controlled by whichever player is currently in last place. Unlike the other paddle-boats, it does not require coal, allowing it to move without refueling. Its presence can be used to hamper opponents who are in the lead.
With additional river layouts and new rules, Mississippi Queen: The Black Rose expands the original game with more terrain to navigate and a distinctive boat that changes hands during play. The new hazards slow boats down, while refueling stations add dedicated locations for replenishing coal.
This expansion also broadens the player count to six and includes specific equipment for two-player games. Whether adding new river sections or bringing the Black Rose into play, it offers new ways to use the Mississippi Queen system.
