About this board game

Mississippi Queen is a light, fun family racing game for 3–5 players that takes about 45 minutes to play. Set on the Mississippi, it challenges captains to guide paddleboats downstream, pick up passengers, and reach the finish before their rivals.

The river is not fully known at the start. As the boats progress, players create the board by laying river tiles, revealing the twists and turns that lie ahead. This changing route makes planning important, since every new section can affect the best way forward.

Each boat’s movement is governed by the number shown on the red steamboat wheel. Speed and direction can be adjusted by spending limited points from the black steamboat wheel, while onboard coal supplies remain limited. Captains must therefore balance acceleration and maneuvering as they navigate the unfolding river.

  • Race paddleboats down a river revealed tile by tile.
  • Manage movement, speed, direction, and limited coal supplies.
  • Pick up passengers as you progress downstream.
  • Reach one of the three entry hexes to the landing platform to win.

The player who places the last river tile rolls the die again to determine the location of the landing platform. With three possible hexes serving as entry points, the race can demand careful positioning as well as speed.

A rules variant adds an extra objective: to win, a captain must be the first to dock at the finish and make two passenger stops along the way. Released in 1997, Mississippi Queen combines accessible family play with tactical movement and an unpredictable route.
