About this expansion

Modern Naval Battles II: The Campaign Game is a campaign-focused naval combat game for 2–6 players, with play lasting about 90 minutes. Released in 1990, it expands the Modern Naval Battles card game with new ships and action cards.

Players build their fleets from randomly selected vessels representing present-day sea power. Fleets can include frigates, destroyers, battleships, carriers, and submarines, with each type offering different attack and defense capabilities.

Play unfolds in rounds. During their turns, players maneuver ships in their fleets, attack opposing vessels, and defend against enemy attacks. At the end of each round, players receive points for every enemy vessel they have sunk, creating a direct path toward victory.

  • Players: 2–6
  • Play time: approximately 90 minutes
  • Setting: present-day sea power
  • Core play: maneuvering, attacking, defending, and scoring for sunk ships
  • New content: campaign play, additional ships, and action cards

The game can end when a player reaches a specific point total or when all opposing fleets have been sunk. Its medium complexity supports a strategic naval contest without requiring an especially elaborate rules system.

Modern Naval Battles II also connects to the wider Modern Naval Battles series. It expands Modern Naval Battles, while Modern Naval Battles III is available as another expansion. One noted issue is the limited availability of torpedo weapon cards for submarines.
