About this expansion
Modern Naval Battles III is a 2–6-player expansion for the Modern Naval Battles card game, featuring present-day sea power and an approximate 120-minute play time. Released in 1990, it expands the original game with additional cards and an Air Module that brings squadrons of aircraft into play.
Players command fleets built from randomly selected ships and boats, including frigates, destroyers, battleships, carriers, and submarines. Each vessel has different attack and defense capabilities, creating varied fleets for every game. During each round, players take turns maneuvering their ships, attacking opposing vessels, and defending their own fleet against enemy attacks.
- For 2–6 players
- Approximately 120 minutes of play
- Additional Action Cards and ship cards
- An Air Module featuring aircraft squadrons
- Randomly selected fleets with varied attack and defense capabilities
At the end of each round, players receive points for every enemy vessel they have sunk. The game may end when a player reaches a specific point total or when all opposing fleets have been sunk, giving players more than one route to the conclusion of the battle.
Modern Naval Battles III is a medium-complexity naval battle game and an expansion rather than a standalone title. Its focus on additional Action Cards, ship cards, and air power broadens the original system, while the description identifies the limited availability of submarine torpedo weapon cards as a major issue.
The set expands Modern Naval Battles and is part of a series that also includes Modern Naval Battles II: The Campaign Game.
