About this board game
Operation Barclay is a two-player intelligence game with a playing time of about 40 minutes, set in the Mediterranean theater during 1942–1943. One player leads the Allied London Controlling Section, while the other commands the Abwehr in a contest over the truth behind the Allied invasion plans.
The LCS player secretly creates a variable setup by placing tiles face down to determine the locations of a primary and a secondary offensive. Across six game months, the Abwehr seeks enough evidence tokens to reveal these tiles and discover where the Allies intend to land next. The LCS must prevent that information from being uncovered.
Evidence is won through a card-driven struggle. Each player builds a five-card hand and competes to take tricks, with the strongest hand earning two evidence tokens. After the first three cards of a hand are revealed, players can also bet on who will ultimately hold the best five-card hand; correctly judging the outcome is worth three evidence tokens.
- Hidden objectives: Face-down tiles conceal the locations of the primary and secondary offensives.
- Betting and bluffing: Players weigh partial information before committing to a prediction.
- Deck manipulation: A double-cross deck lets cards useful to one player remain face down for a later draw—unless the opponent claims them first.
- Special abilities: Dedicated decks add unique abilities inspired by historical figures, events, and capabilities.
The LCS can draw on Ultra, decrypts of German codes, but using this resource effectively is essential. With competing information, concealed plans, calculated wagers, and opportunities for deception, Operation Barclay presents a focused battle of military intelligence in a low-to-medium complexity game.
