About this board game

Operation Typhoon: The German Assault on Moscow, 1941 is a two-player monster wargame with an approximately 1,500-minute playing time, simulating the German attempt to capture Moscow.

Based on a variation of the Panzergruppe Guderian system, the game focuses on operational-scale combat during the crucial period from 15 November to 30 November 1941. Each turn represents one day, while each hex covers 2.7 miles (4.0 km).

A distinctive feature is its system of variable unit strength. Units have ratings for size and morale, but their actual combat strengths remain uncertain until a chit is randomly drawn when a unit first enters combat. This fog-of-war mechanism makes engagements difficult to assess and gives battlefield information a central role.

Most Soviet units are winterized, shown in white on red, while no German units are winterized. In snow, non-winterized units have their movement and combat values halved, making weather an important consideration for both sides.

  • Four 16-turn scenarios covering the north, center, and south map areas, plus a campaign using all scenarios
  • German units represented as regiments and Soviet units as divisions
  • Three maps in the SPI edition, or four large and four smaller maps in the Decision Games edition
  • Counter sheets, player displays, weather player aid cards, charts, rules, storage bags, and dice, depending on edition

Operation Typhoon is a large but playable simulation and a strong choice for players seeking an extended, multi-player wargame experience centered on the German drive toward Moscow.
