About this board game

Pole Position is a racing game for 2–5 players, designed for a playing time of about 60 minutes. Released in 1989, it uses a modular board and simultaneous card choices to determine the order of movement.

Each player holds cards numbered from 1 to 9. Everyone chooses one card, then all chosen cards are revealed at the same time. The player who reveals the highest card moves first, creating a shared race for position each turn.

The modular board includes spaces with special features that shape the action. These spaces are central to the game, offering effects such as TURBO, which lets a player win one position.

  • Choose and reveal numbered cards simultaneously.
  • Use the modular board’s special spaces.
  • Account for the extra movement cost of passing an opponent.
  • Score points from three cars.

Positioning matters because moving in front of an opponent costs 1 additional movement point. The race therefore combines card timing with the changing opportunities provided by the board’s special spaces.

At the end, the player with the most points from their three cars wins the race. With its numbered cards, modular board, and position-focused movement, Pole Position presents a structured racing contest for up to five players.
