About this board game
Poseidon is an 18xx-inspired strategy game for 2–5 players, with a playing time of approximately 120 minutes, in which leaders guide different peoples toward the greatest personal fortune.
Players explore, send out fleets, build trading posts, and generate profit. Rather than operating corporations, each player controls a country or people, while the ultimate objective remains personal wealth: the richest player at the end of the game wins.
Poseidon brings several familiar 18xx ideas to a different setting. Players create trade routes in place of railway lines, and common transportation of the era—such as ships—replaces trains. Trading posts take the role of the stations found in traditional 18xx games.
- Control a country or people instead of running a corporation.
- Explore and send out fleets to develop trade.
- Create trade routes using different types of transportation.
- Build trading posts and pursue personal profit.
- Compete to finish with the greatest wealth.
With its focus on trade, transportation, expanding networks, and individual fortunes, the game offers the core concepts of 18xx in a relatively short format. Its approximately two-hour running time makes it suitable both for players new to 18xx-style games and for experienced train gamers seeking a different theme and setting.
The 2010 release includes a game board, eight possession sheets, play money, numerous wooden pieces, cards, and a rule book. Together, these components support the exploration, fleet deployment, route creation, trading-post construction, and profit-making at the heart of Poseidon.
