About this board game

Prehistory is a 2018 board game for 2–4 players with an approximately 120-minute play time, in which late Stone Age tribes search for food, resources, and a new home.

Your campsite can no longer support everyone, so your tribe must move on and discover new areas. Explore an expanding map, search for supplies, and compete to find the richest soil while building a new home and establishing a strong tribe.

Survival depends on managing resources and selecting actions carefully. You may gather, fish, hunt, create paintings on your walls, or perform a ceremony to influence the forces of nature. Many of these actions help you gain victory points as your tribe progresses.

  • Explore: Move out from the campsite and discover new areas as the map expands.
  • Gather resources: Search for food and supplies needed to keep your tribe moving forward.
  • Choose actions: Use markers to secure rights to actions and then carry out additional actions.
  • Build progress: Develop your tribe, establish a new home, and pursue victory points.

Markers in Prehistory have a distinctive dual purpose. When used to pay for an action, they count as resources; when played from your special stock, their colors determine which action is performed.

Each round, players receive new resources, move across the map, and discover more of the world. Actions unfold in two phases: first, resources are handed over at the central campsite to gain the rights to perform particular actions; then, those markers are regained as action cubes for further choices.

The player who makes the smartest action selections and finishes with the most progress and wealth will survive to thrive and win.
