About this board game
Schachen is a two-player chess variant played in about 30 minutes, combining familiar chess movement with cards instead of a game board. It preserves the goal of chess—checkmate the opponent’s king—while creating a compact game with players entering the confrontation directly.
At the beginning of the game, each player has a king and four pawns. Cards representing the remaining chess pieces form a deck, and each player draws three cards to create a hand of possible reinforcements.
On an active player’s turn, the first step is to move a piece according to the original rules of chess. The player may then choose one of the three cards in hand and place it next to an existing card before drawing a replacement card from the deck.
- Pawns must be placed beside another pawn.
- All other figures must be placed behind a pawn.
- Players may optionally add one card after moving.
- The game ends with the familiar objective of checkmating the opposing king.
These additional placement rules simplify and expand the original chess experience while keeping its central objective intact. The result is a focused alternative for players who like and know chess but find the original game too complex or too long.
With its combination of chess rules, a three-card hand, and a boardless layout, Schachen offers a direct way to experience a chess confrontation. Its two-player format and approximately 30-minute playing time make it a compact choice for a shorter chess-inspired session.
