About this board game

Sky Galleons of Mars is a tactical ship-combat board game for 2–6 players, with games lasting about 120 minutes. Set in a fantasy Victorian era of space exploration, it serves as the tactical combat game for the Space: 1889 role-playing system.

The game has mechanics reminiscent of Star Fleet Battles and Interceptor, but its play has a distinctly naval character. Imagine the style of Wooden Ships & Iron Men with altitude added to the battlefield, as detailed plastic ships maneuver across large hex maps.

Each turn begins with an Initiative Phase. Players can form or disband boarding parties, change crew assignments, and roll to determine who becomes the First Player. Two Movement/Fire Phases then follow, giving each player a chance to move all their vessels while both sides fire according to range, weapons, and other factors.

  • Basic rules cover movement, firing, and taking damage.
  • Advanced rules add ramming, grappling, towing, small arms, and crew quality.
  • Two large, fully rendered hex maps accommodate the detailed plastic ships.
  • Seven scenarios and campaign-game rules provide structured ways to play.

The rules are divided into Basic and Advanced sections, allowing groups to begin with a simpler system before adding more detailed combat and crew interactions. This makes Sky Galleons of Mars a focused blend of tactical maneuvering, ship damage, and close-quarters action in an imaginative Victorian space setting.
