Steam Torpedo: First Contact is a two-player underwater battle tactics game that takes around 30–40 minutes to play. Each player builds a unique submarine before the battle begins, then uses its compartments and crew to outmaneuver the opposing vessel.

Submarine construction is central to the experience. Choose ten tiles to outfit different compartments, shaping your vessel with options such as shielding, a faster engine, or greater firepower. Every submarine is different, so each player must develop a strategy around their chosen configuration.

On the game board, each submarine is represented by a cardboard cutout. Its position shows whether it is facing the enemy from the front, back, or side, as well as whether the vessels are in contact or away. These positional details define the changing circumstances of the underwater engagement.

During the battle, players use their five crew members to enable the compartments of their submarine. Activating compartments can trigger a variety of effects, including attacks capable of inflicting devastating damage on the opposing submarine.
