About this board game
Supernova is a space strategy board game for 3–5 players, with an approximately 180-minute play time. Players lead civilizations fleeing a solar system whose sun is steadily approaching supernova, competing to secure a foothold in a new solar system before their home world is destroyed.
Over the next millennium, civilizations must expand while protecting the territory they claim. Players earn points by owning planets and moons, generating income, and placing tiles to grow their empires. Careful planning is essential: expanding too quickly can leave territory vulnerable, while insufficient expansion may limit future opportunities.
Technology supports each civilization’s struggle for survival. Players can learn new capabilities in four areas:
- Weapons
- Shields
- Communications
- Engines
Mining moons provides income, while discovering alien races on new planets can grant valuable bonuses. When civilizations clash, Supernova uses a unique card-based battle system, giving players another way to contest space and defend what they have rightfully won.
The modular game board creates a different experience with each play. Players vie for control of space as well as the unstable sun, balancing expansion, defense, income, and technological development until the sun finally goes supernova. The player with the most points at that moment is proclaimed the winner.
With its space-conquest setting and artwork inspired by Mike Doyle, Supernova offers a large-scale contest for survival and control. It is part of Valley Games’ Modern Line and was released in 2008.
