About this board game

TAMSK is a two-player board game with a 20-minute play time, released in 1998. Played on a hexagonal board, it uses sand timers as the players’ unique pieces, creating a game where movement and dwindling time are closely connected.

On a turn, a player moves one of their sand timers to an adjacent space and flips the timer in the process. The board contains several holes designed to hold these distinctive pieces, while each space has a limit on how many times it can be occupied.

Not every space offers the same amount of access. The more central spaces can accommodate more traffic, making the board’s occupancy limits an important part of play. Players must work within these restrictions as they move their timers across the hexagonal layout.

  • For 2 players
  • Approximately 20 minutes of play
  • Sand timers serve as the playing pieces
  • Adjacent movement with a timer flip on every turn
  • Spaces have limited occupancy, with more central spaces allowing more traffic

The objective in TAMSK is straightforward: have at least one of your pieces still able to move when your opponent’s pieces are either locked in place or out of sand. This gives every movement a direct connection to the end condition, as players contend with both the board’s limited spaces and their timers.

Originally part of project GIPF, TAMSK presents its central challenge through a focused combination of spatial movement, restricted board access, and sand timers. Its distinctive components make the game’s simple turn structure immediately recognizable.
