Tao Long: The Way of the Dragon – The Tiger and the Phoenix is a 2017 expansion for 2–4 players, with a play time of 20 minutes. It replaces the earth dragon with a three-tile tiger and a single-tile phoenix, creating a distinct creature combination for the earth player.

The tiger functions much like the earth dragon, but with one important restriction: it can only expel water. The phoenix begins the game off the board, so the tiger-and-phoenix player starts with three-quarters of the length of the heaven dragon.

The phoenix acts like a single-tile dragon with a focused ability. It can only repel fire, and its damage removes fire stones. Its appearance is tied directly to the player’s fire meter, making its presence on the board change as that meter fills and empties.

• The three-tile tiger replaces the earth dragon.
• The one-tile phoenix begins off the board.
• The phoenix appears adjacent to the tiger when the fire meter has at least one stone.
• If the fire meter becomes empty, the phoenix leaves the board.
• Whenever the fire meter starts filling again, the phoenix rises once more.

While the phoenix is in play, the tiger-and-phoenix player moves both creatures in any order. This expansion adds a shifting tactical element to Tao Long: The Way of the Dragon, as the player’s fire meter determines whether the phoenix is available to act alongside the tiger.
