The Castles of Burgundy: 1st Expansion – New Player Boards is an expansion for 2–4 players, with a play time of 90 minutes. It adds four double-sided player boards, numbered 10a–10h, to the original game.

These boards introduce a stricter placement rule for tiles in your princedom. As in the original game, every tile must be placed next to at least one tile that has already been laid out. In addition, each new tile must always be connected, directly or indirectly, with at least one castle.

A tile can satisfy this requirement by being placed directly next to a castle or by being connected to a castle through tiles of the same color. A different color does not count. This creates a more specific requirement for expanding your princedom and makes the relationship between castles and matching colored areas central to the new boards.

• Four double-sided player boards, numbered 10a–10h
• New tiles must remain connected to at least one castle
• Indirect connections must use the same color
• New castles may still be added as before
• Previously set-aside castles can be retrieved for both dice actions and 5 victory points

The additional rule does not apply to new castles: they may be added according to the original placement rules. At any time, a player may also spend the cost of both dice actions and 5 victory points to retrieve a previously set-aside Castle tile from an earlier round and place it in their reserve.

The Castles of Burgundy: 1st Expansion – New Player Boards was included with Spielbox magazine issue 05/2011. Its four alternative boards offer a focused variation on tile placement while preserving the original game’s core framework.
