About this expansion
Phalanx: Great Battles of Alexander Module is a two-player historical battle game with an approximate playing time of 240 minutes. It covers two major battles from the waning days of the Successor Wars: Sellasia in 221 BC and Mantinea in 207 BC.
These conflicts took place while Greek city-states and leagues, along with the descendants of the original Diadochoi, continued fighting for Hellenic supremacy. The module explores an era when the phalanx—the massive heavy-infantry formation brought to peak efficiency by Alexander—was still in its heyday.
- Sellasia, 221 BC
- Mantinea, 207 BC
The armies featured in these battles are distinctly Macedonian in style, combining many different unit types and capabilities. Because of the terrain, cavalry plays an almost nonexistent role, placing the emphasis on the varied forces fighting around the army’s central formation.
The phalanx remains the army’s anchor in both battles. Yet its dominance was approaching a major historical challenge: these engagements occurred only a generation before its initial comeuppance against a Roman army at Cynoscephalae.
Phalanx: Great Battles of Alexander Module requires a copy of The Great Battles of Alexander or Great Battles of Alexander, Deluxe Edition. Released in 1998, it offers a focused look at late Successor Wars warfare and the final generation of the Hellenic phalanx’s heyday.
