About this board game

The Lord of the Rings: Combat Hex Tradeable Miniatures Game is a two-player game with an approximately 60-minute play time, released in 2003. Players take command of the Legions of Middle-earth in a fast-paced battle centered on the fate of the One Ring.

Using expertly pre-painted miniatures and the intuitive Combat Hex rules system, the game brings the excitement of The Lord of the Rings movies to the tabletop. Your goal is to destroy the One Ring—or claim its terrible power for yourself.

Every turn is divided into four phases. The Strategy phase begins with both players rolling to determine who will be the attacker and who will be the defender. The player who rolls highest chooses which role to take for that turn.

  • Attacker’s Action phase: Each attacking warrior may move, shoot, or do nothing.
  • Defender’s Action phase: After the attacker completes all actions, the defender takes an action with each warrior.
  • Combat phase: Warriors fight, with defeated warriors remaining until the end of the phase.

Combat creates a memorable final exchange: warriors killed during the Combat phase are not removed until that phase ends, so they can still fight back if they are struck down. This rule gives battles a dramatic edge and ensures that attacks may have consequences even after a warrior falls.

With its clear turn structure, movie-inspired setting, and ready-to-play painted miniatures, The Lord of the Rings: Combat Hex Tradeable Miniatures Game offers a focused confrontation for two players seeking a compact Middle-earth battle.
