About this board game

The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game is a tradeable card game for 2–6 players, with games lasting about 45 minutes, released in 2001. It follows Frodo and his companions from Bag End to the destruction of the Ring at Mount Doom.

The cards are largely loyal to The Lord of the Rings movies, while also drawing on lore and atmospheres from the book. Most of the time, the experience feels like playing through the movie, though some card collections introduce figures such as Tom Bombadil and Ghan Buri Ghan.

Players use two opposing sides of the story: Free Peoples cards represent the heroes, while Shadow cards bring threats against them. When you play Free Peoples cards, you pay their cost in Twilight Points to your opponent, who can then use those points to play Shadow cards and attack you.

  • Incremental combat: losing a combat usually causes a wound rather than immediately eliminating a character.
  • Limited health: characters can suffer only a certain number of wounds, and their health is also used for special card actions.
  • Hand-filling play: the game uses a distinctive hand-filling approach instead of simply drawing one card each turn.
  • Deck-building limit: players may include a maximum of four copies of a card, counting different versions of the same character together.

The game developed across sets including Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, Return of the King, Reflections, Mount Doom, and Ages’ End. The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game ended after Decipher experienced financial difficulties and let the license expire.
