About this board game
The Scepter of Zavandor is a board game for 2–6 players, with an approximate play time of 90 minutes. First released in 2004, it places players in the roles of young magicians pursuing the powerful position of archmage.
Each magician has gained possession of old magical knowledge and must use it to increase their power and influence. The ultimate symbol of this ambition is the Scepter of Zavandor, which represents the position they hope to achieve.
Players develop their magical standing by enchanting jewels and seeking out knowledge. An auction mechanism gives them the opportunity to acquire valuable artifacts and sentinels, adding further ways to build their position during the game.
Victory points come from several sources, rewarding players for the magical assets and knowledge they obtain. Points are earned through:
- Active gems
- Artifacts
- Sentinels
- Knowledge
With its combination of jewel enchantment, knowledge gathering, and auctions for artifacts and sentinels, The Scepter of Zavandor offers a focused contest for magical power. Players work toward the archmage’s position while building the collection of elements that contributes to their victory points.
The rulebook also includes a note thanking James Hlavaty for permission to copy the game mechanics from Outpost. For players drawn to games of magic, power, and competing paths to victory, The Scepter of Zavandor presents a substantial board game experience for a small to medium-sized group.
