About this board game
Throneworld is a science-fiction conquest game for 2–6 players, with play lasting around 360 minutes. Players begin at the edges of the board and expand inward, exploring systems on the route to the central Throneworld.
Each system becomes progressively tougher as fleets move toward the center. Players may face units with greater size or higher technology levels, making every advance part of a larger struggle for control.
A distinctive feature of Throneworld is the freedom to choose from 11 different unit types: six space unit types and five ground unit types. These units can be organized into fleets used to explore and conquer worlds.
- Space Combat: technology for space battles
- Ground Combat: technology for battles on worlds
- Jump: determines how far a fleet may move
- Communications: determines the distance at which fleets can be controlled
These four technologies shape how players move, fight, and manage their expanding forces. The combination of fleet organization, exploration, conquest, and technological development creates a long-form contest across the board.
Victory goes to the player who is first to control a certain number of systems for a full turn. The central Throneworld is especially valuable: controlling it counts as six systems, making the race toward the center a crucial part of the game’s objective. Released in 1997, Throneworld offers a substantial galactic campaign for groups seeking an extended battle for territory.
