Tobago: Volcano

About this expansion

Tobago: Volcano is an expansion for 2–4 players that adds a towering volcano, spreading lava, and new clues to the 45-minute Tobago treasure hunt. It can be played only with the Tobago base game.

The volcano occupies seven hexes and changes how treasures are found. During setup, each player places a triangular three-hex tile near the island’s perimeter. One hex is covered with lava, while the player’s ATV begins on another.

Volcanic clues let players bend the usual card-playing rules. A player may lay down an illegal card—for example, playing “not in the mountains” after an “in the mountains” clue has already been used for that treasure—then immediately cover it with one of the expansion’s four volcanic clue cards:

• Next to the volcano
• Not next to the volcano
• Next to lava
• Not next to lava

When that treasure is claimed, the volcanic clue returns to the side of the playing area for later use. This gives the search new possibilities while keeping the special cards available throughout the game.

Each time a player collects an amulet, another hex of lava is added to the board. The new lava must be adjacent to the volcano or to lava already in play, gradually reshaping the island. Forests can change size or disappear, and treasures may be moved to locations that previously seemed unlikely.

ATVs may cross lava during a turn, but they cannot stop there. Crossing requires spending an amulet, or, if the player has none, discarding their largest treasure card. In Tobago: Volcano, every lava flow can change both the treasure clues and the safest route across the island.
